Anyone know about Raymond Pettibone mini-Comix?  He did quite a few (not listed in JK).  He's a famous punk artist who did the covers for Black Flag and designed their 4 black bars logo.  He's considered a respected artist now with art hanging in MOCA (Museum of Contemporary Art) and other places.  I know he did many self-produced mini-Comix (probably in the late 70's to the mid 80's).

Here's a scan of one from 1985.

Cool, you learn something everyday. I know this guy's art, but had no idea who he was. I learned he is the brother of Greg Ginn, owner of SST Records and also founding member of Black Flag. I am a fan of Black Flag's music, but not a diehard fan in that I would know things like that. I used to be on the SST mailing list, I bet these mini's were probably offered for sale at the time since they were put out by SST Pubs, though of course, I wasn't collecting them at the time.

Definitely something to keep an eye open for.

Here's one of his most well known pieces, the cover to Sonic Youth's record "Goo":

It's all overpriced, if you ask me, but that'll give you an idea of some of his other books.

Thanks for the great info.

No problem. As per some of the descriptions on that page, it seems as though there's an index of Pettibon's artist's books entitled, Uwe Koch & Roberto Ohrt's "A Catalogue Raisonné of Artists' Books by Raymond Pettibon, 1978-98." I don't own a copy, but would be curious to see it.

Wow, I have quite a few and thought $50 each might be a lot, but after looking at that site it looks like it would be a bargain.  I have a few copies of a color cover one he did called HUP.

$50 is probably a bargain, but $200+ seems a bit much. It appears as though his audience goes well beyond the comix-collecting scene, like Joe Brainard's, so you have two sets of people vying for his work.

Hi-De-Ho Comics, in Santa Monica, auctioned some of his stuff not too long ago:

Look at what I just came across.
"all 111 self-published books."
"The original photocopies publications themselves fetch several thousand each." "Tripping Corpse, and the following 44 publications made in the next four years were distributed by SST (Greg Ginn's record label and distribution company (did you know SST stands for Solid State Transistors)), and anywhere from 50 to 500 copies were made of each. In the late 1980s about 400 copies of most issues were destroyed, making many of these original books extremely valuable."

I think I'll start at $70 since those eBay ones sold for about that.  Let me know if anyone is interested I've got available copies of all those listed above in the eBay auctions.

I came across that blurb about 400 copies being destroyed, but I would like to know why. Was it accidental? Some of the copies that Hi-De-Ho was selling were high numbers (one was 400+), so I wonder how true that is. Then again, that particular book could've been distributed in reverse order, so who knows.

I would guess at those numbers that those destroyed ones probably has something to do with the artist at those numbers (was there a fire or flood or did he destroy them intentionally once he became a big name?)
The Wavy Gravy and Wavy Gravy II are numbered and range in number from the 200's to 400's.  The others are not.

Looks like there was a German edition of that 992 page book also.
The U.S. version looks to go for $1,400-2,000 for the Hard cover and $350-800 for the soft cover.  Ouch!  Checked my library online and they don't show a copy of it, anyone with access to a copy?  Would like to know about the destroyed comix also???
