Post by: Visitor Q on November 09, 2007, 03:24:01 PM
What is your prize underground comix in your collection?

Egads!  I just knew this question would eventually raise its ugly head.
:happy2:

I don't think I can really answer that one.  They're all kinda precious to me.  However, there is a series that still gets me to LOL'ing whenever I read it again.  Still!  :Freak Bros - Cat:

Well I guess my prize book would be my S. Clay Wilson portfolio (not really a comix though) which has original art with it but I think my two favorites are Cunt and Douglas Comix.

Well, it would be easy to say my first print of Zap #1, which is the most valuable, but I think it might be my two copies of the Cunt Comix white pages version. I snagged the last ones Don Donahue had in his inventory.

Me thinks you should sell me one of those Cunts, I only got the newspaper version.

Guess mine has to be the signed by R. Crumb Zap Comix #2 (1st print) with COA (the only one) by Donahue stating it's one of 5 that he received from Crumb at the Gallery opening.

I have a few things signed by Crumb. In fact I picked up an issue of Zap that is signed by every single artist that was in that issue including Rick Griffin! Some of it is personalize to the person that must have had it singed at a show but get this, I paid 1 dollar for it at a local comic book store! The guy had no clue it was signed until after the fact.

This was only about 2 to 3 years ago, so there are still treasures to be found out there! :pirate2:

The limited hard cover edition of Head Comix. It was Crumbs own copy and is one of only 5 printed. (If you count art, the Bode cover to Vampirella 3 or the cover the Tales of the Ozone 1,)

Arnold... Can't wait to see that stuff this weekend!

Don't forget to shoot me your cell.

Jason

Ps. Post some pix in the original art section or I can take some for you when I come over.

When you come over, to paraphrase what  they said in SIGNS, Shoot away. P.S. Anyone coming to the show on Sat, check for me at Dolgoff's comics. I'll be there stealing his books.

Arnie has mentioned in the past that I could come over, but I don't know if I want to waste his time since I'm probably not going to be spending a lot of money in NY. I just quit my latest job and promised my wife that after this show, I was going to be doing more selling than buying. I have told her that I'm not selling my undergrounds, though. I'm thinking of bringing some of my doubles to trade, I have a couple extra Cherry Poptart #1's (1st), and a Mr. Natural #1 (1st) and a Freak Brothers #1 (1st) plus a ton of other stuff.

Well if you can make me a list of your doubles I would consdier buying some of it, providing I need it and the price is right.

I don't think you will get much selling stuff at a show, but you never know.

Yeah, I don't think anyone does too well selling to dealers at shows, but I think I recall hearing OldMilwaukee (Justin) saying he brought stuff to shows to trade and he was happy with what he got.

As for what I'll be bringing, it's likely you already have it, it will only be stuff that I have duplicates of, like the stuff I mentioned in the above post.

I think you may fair better off in trade but who knows. Good luck either way!

I like to buy rare books. Not $5 or $10 Last gasp, Print Mint, Rip Off, etc. I do trade for  books that I can get $50 or more for, especially if you are looking for the common stuff. Show me  your material at the show. I really want 1982 and before however. I also send money for material that is quality.

I just reread you comments. How could bullshitting about ugs with someone you know over the net be a waste of time. If you want, join me and Jason after the show on Sat.

I'll definitely run into you at the show, no question on that. I have to find out what the VALIANT comics guys have planned as I'm assuming Saturday night will be the big night to do stuff with those guys, since some aren't coming in Friday and some (like me) are leaving a little early Sunday.

Enjoy the show you guys, wish I could be there.
And if you come across any incredibly cheap copies of FB #2 (1st print "A" or "B") or 4th print copies...

I went by Dolgoff's booth several times to look for The Doctor on Saturday, but didn't see him. I was going to ask Dolgoff if he had any undergrounds or knew when the Dr. was coming in, but every time I went to his booth, the guy would look at me and then basically ignore me. Usually if a dealer sees someone looking at his stuff, he will at least acknowledge them with a hello. I guess he figured that I looked like I didn't have a lot of money to spend.  :icon_scratch:

J... I stopped by that booth as well, never saw Arnold there either.

Yeah zazz, welcome to the boards.

I was at the booth, off and on from 11 to 3 when I left. Other than seeing Bonzai  I missed everyone and the show was mostly a bust. Picked up a misprint Heavi-Tragi comics and a Marvel Zombie T-Shirt.  Other than that, I should have stayed in bed. If you want my list, brother j, just pm me your real email. It is an excel file.

I don't think I even made it to the show until 2. The day for me was more or less a disaster!

Who even had Undergorunds there? I mean like I said, I was not really looking too hard but they were not out in the open from what I could tell. Maybe it was on of those "have to ask" type deals?

Jason

It exactly was that, you had to ask. Here's the lowdown on who I found with undergrounds.

Motor City had a lot of good stuff, extremely high prices. I personally think some of them were TOO high, for instance, VG/F copies of Zap #1 (2nd) for $500.

Two other dealers had some in boxes. One was a younger kid, they had two small boxes of stuff. Nothing impressive. I picked up a Fear and Laughter #1 for $8, a "2" for $10 and a Bent 2nd print in nice shape for $5. I bought the two latter books to have S. Clay Wilson sign them, but I only had him sign the "2" because he seemed a bit pissed that I didn't want to buy any of the stuff that he had for sale.

The other dealer was another young guy, very nice and full of energy, he was talking a mile a minute. I helped him identify some printings and I bought a stack from him on Sunday because his prices were all 50% off. Got a nice stack of seven UG's I needed for $20.

One other guy had a few UG items, some Crumb books (not comics, but the thick books) and an issue of Anomaly. I didn't buy anything from him.

Hahaha... Yeah I can see that with Wilson. It's funny, the copy of "Spots" I brought him to sign with the Checkered Demon on the inside. He wrote word bubbles from him. The first one said something to the effect of, "Who is this guy S. Clay Wilson?" and then the other one said, "He's a drunk guy in N.Y.C.".

Like I said, I was more or less there to meet those guys who I have talked to before and was not really looking all that much for comix. As stated, it was a pretty hectic day for me in general, finding comix was sorta an after thought. I was more or less concerned with the artist as I can buy comix any old day of the week.

BTW, I don't think Fogel or Hippycomix were there AT ALL, and they were supposed to be a sponsor. I think Dan was also supposed to run the Wilson/Spain panel, which might explain why it was cancelled.

I knew Dan was not going to be there even before the show. I spoke to him prior, about a week before and told me he was not going to make it due to work on the update for the guide. Fogel is very nice to speak with on the phone and between us (without going into details) there is a little more (I think?) as to why he was not there. I'm going to leave it at but I don't think you will see Fogel sponsoring anymore of Carbo's Shows.

I just wanted to wish all of ya'll a Happy Thanksgiving! I'll be more active after this weekend (or at least try to be). I'm one of the fellas that is tracking ebay sales of the rarer UGs. Although lately I've been side tracked with Golden Age stuff....... I found this site by way of an email from Zonker (of UG Hub fame). As for UGs at the big Cons, the last time I went to SD (a few years ago) the only thing that remotely caught my eye was a San Fran 1 in VF (asking price was $150). I wound up pulling one from ebay for a lot less than that....... Anyway, cheers to all and I'm glad to see a site like this!

Dan was not there, probably back in Oakland. The young fellow with the 2 Crumb books is my long time friend and fellow Corben nut, Manny Marris (mannylunch) If anything was good was at the show, he would have gotten it Friday, but he didn't get anything.  I love Motor City, these always make my prices seem cheap. The shame was that Terry's Comics didn't show up. He usually has stuff. If you saw someone wearing a gray "YOU DON'T KNOW ME" t-shirt, that was me. Sorry I missed you guys, but I will be taking a romantic? 4 day vacation in Philly from Dec 20-24. Maybe we could meet up and have diner.then  The Doc
