I think I answered this one already, 36 years old. Haven't been collecting all that long, probably less than 5 years, not sure.

I'm 33 and have been collecting since the late 80's but that's comic books in general. I guess it was not too long till I discovered Undergrounds, a few years after I started collecting I would have to guess.

My first love was Mad, Cracked and Crazy.

My site kinda explains that question (http://sirrealcomix.mrainey.com/whois.htm), but for you youngsters I'll highlight & paraphrase.

I guess I'd call myself a third generation collector.  I saw the first generation, and read a few in the second generation.  I'm 51 (as of today), and I actively started collecting in 1977.  Stopped collecting in '84, and started again in '90.

Was never much of a collector, myself, as in taking good care of what I purchased. I just tended to hoard what I bought. 52 years- started hoarding in the early '60's. My religious step-mother always threw away my Comics Code comics and my Mad and CARtoons magazines, so I had to keep them hidden away in a secretive hoards. She got most of them, though. Started buying UG's in the early '70's. Bought them to see what we could get away with while drawing and publishing our own. Stood at the Crossroads in 1976.

I am 108 years old and have been collecting them since Dell Dick Tracy 7. I started collecting Ugs when the Realist was in issue 10 or 11 and Help 1 came out. While I divested of most of my normal comics (Donald Duck, Spidey, etc) I just keep getting them god damm ugs.

I've been collecting comics since the early 80's, the less than five years was just for undergrounds specifically. (just to clarify)

I started collecting comics around 1984 until around 1988.  My younger brother took over my collection for a year or two then it went into the closet where I pulled the approx. 12 long boxes out around Nov. of last year.  Started collecting Undergrounds about this time last year, so I would say this is about my 1 year anniversary.
By the way Sir Real, if it's your birthday, then Happy Birthday!!!

I am over 40.... Okay, 48 to be specific. But don't expect me to change my handle when I turn 50. After all, when I'm 108 like Dr. S, I'll still be over 40!

I've been collecting comics since about 1975 and bought my first Young Lust #1 in 1977. I collected comics and periodicals on and off for the next 28 years (especially Mad, National Lampoon and Heavy Metal). But I didn't get serious about UG collecting until March, 2005 (according to my database), when I bought Psychotic Adventures #3. I joined the CPG forum the next month and bought 400 more undergrounds by the end of that year. And 4,000 comix since then.

Glad to see there are people under 40 who are passionate about the hobby.

Side note: My kids (son and daughter, 11 and 8) know I collect comic books, but they don't yet know what kind of comic books. They've only shown a passing interest in comics in any form (besides cartoons). I sometimes wonder whether they will ever get into comic books or, for my son, into undergrounds. I tend to doubt it. Unless maybe my son's interest suddenly grows well after adulthood.

Dr. S, didn't you mention once that your kids have little interest in your collection? And yet, aren't you planning to pass the bulk of your "permanent" collection on to your kids? Does it bother you that they will probably liquidate it after your death or is that fine with you?

Just curious, as I may be in the same boat. Unless I cash out my collection to help finance my own retirement.

As long as they sell it for what it's worth. They know the key players Dolgoff, Fogel, Geppi, Albert Moy, etc and I have a catalog of value. And then there is  eBay and Heritage. I get to enjoy my compulsions and they get an inheritance.

I am 33 and started to actively research undergrounds beginning around 2000 when a friend, knowing I was into comics a little growing up (and knowing my interests around the millennium), gave me a stack of UG's in a gallon ziplock bag- mostly Freak Bros, Fat Freddy's Cat, and a Mr Natural.  I tried for a long time to learn more about them- printings, why they weren't in Overstreet, etc., but to no avail.  I watched (never bid) Freak Brothers & Zap Comix auctions on eBay for over 2 years trying to learn which were early printings, but it wasn't helping... I kept waiting for a 35-cent Freak Bros. #1!

When we moved to Louisiana (c. 2002), I asked the grrl to check out every book on comics from LSU's library and one of the books she came home with was Estren's "A History of Underground Comix."  I found myself a used copy of Kennedy for around twelve bucks and I've been buying 'em ever since (started by buying from Donahue).

Speaking of Don, I don't know if I'm the only one, but I wish he would offer up some different books when he does his eBay sales. It's almost always the same books. I assume they are the ones he is stocked deeply with. I haven't bought anything from him in a while. I'd actually like to see a new edition of his catalog, as mine is months old and I'm sure not accurate anymore.

I'm nearly one year shy of the age Christ was when he was crucified, according to popular belief, that is. I've been collecting underground comix since the age of six or seven, though it's difficult to remember, but suffice it to say that it's been over twenty years.

My introduction to comix came by way of advertisements for them in the back pages of my father's High Society and Hustler magazines. If memory serves, the ads offered a sampler for x amount of dollars and showed pictures of Anarchy Comics #3, Bizarre Sex #10, Snatch #3, Young Lust #5, etc. Twisted and perverse, even then, I was fascinated by the covers and longed to know what awaited beyond. Earlier than that, though, I would admire many of Skip Williamson's contributions to 70s-era Playboy magazine. I can barely remember what most of them were about, though there was one instance when Snappy Sammy Smoot came into contact with a coffee enema . . . that one stuck. Little Annie Fanny, usually on or near the last page in the same magazines, was another favorite of mine and I would always tear them out when I came across them.

It was at a flea market that I happened upon a comic vendor who had a box labeled "ADULTS ONLY" under his table. My father, being the liberal-minded parent that he was, told the man selling them that it was okay for me to look and he obliged. It was so many years ago, but Zam was one of my first comix. I still remember being horrified and enthralled by Spain's Beyond The Exorcist (a movie just about every Catholic schoolboy had nightmares of).

At any rate, here I still am, some two-and-a-half decades later, as much in love with comix as ever, though my interest has mainly shifted to foreign, mostly British comix, and the most elusive, most obscure American offerings, given all that I've . . . assimilated through the years.

I suppose I've bored you all enough, so I shall bring this to a close.

I'm 43 yrs old and my 9 yrs boy does not know much about U-comix yet (my wife knows about them and does not like - for her collecting comics is childish, but she never left me because of that, har har). I started collecting Finnish comics somewhere mid 70s after inheriting my big bros Finnish good-for-nothing war comics collection. Needless to say that I swapped them to "better" comics (at least according my own taste). He used to have a huge quantity of Finnish Warren reprints (we called it "Shokki", as they do in Sweden, "Chock"). Always when my bro did not know, my mom get rid of his horror magazines and burn them!

I think my first touch to U-comix was http://headcomix.info/wiki/doku.php?id=pilajuttuja_ja_piirroksia, a Finnish collection album full of Robert Crumb. My need for comics was not the same after that. I think much later my mom found that issue as well and get rid of it. Shame. It was a good item. Rare item nowadays.

But the Golden Ages of my collecting comics was beginning of 80s, when I moved out of home. It was specially peak of my U-comix. In November 1981 I met Heavy Metal and Richard Corben! I left Finnish comics just like that and focused to U-comix and Richard Corben. In Summer 1998 I moved to the Capital of Finland and I practically stopped collecting comics except Richard Corben. I have sold out majority of my Finnish comics and nowadays I'm interested only Richard Corben stuff. The best Corben stuff I bought mid 90s - before moving to Helsinki - on a visit to London. I did trip by my own and my suitcase was overweighted of comics I found. Customers were mercyful for me and did not charge extra. :7

P.S. I've been working with printed matter all my life. It's my occupation.

It's in the record books...I am sixty this past August.
I have been buying and reading comix since a Holiday trip to Dallas 12/69 - 1/70.
I began collecting them right after I read Slow Death, or San Francisco 1, or Motor City...whatever.  Those mothers really turned this iconoclast down an avenue that truly, seriously has affected my life choices.
Still collecting stuff 37 years later.  In the  collectibles 'biz' doing Cons and trade shows off and on since 1972.  Two retail stores under my belt with The Little Barn in between.
Holy Moley!  I've been  turned into a punchline...I've got records(underwear?)(comix?) that I bought from head shops that are older than some of you guys.

Thanks for this site.  I'll be here.
I love it when ya'll are fanboys...

Yes, I do.
Plus a bunch more.
Less what I sold already.
But nothing off your wanted-list, Jeeze!
We had (since I'm not active anymore)about six wanted books in common...I figured that together we been looking for them for seventy years plus.  I got depressed.  So I shot myself.
Then I was depressed, with a gunshot wound.

I misoverestimated, dr.  It was five: Dirtie Girdie, Fat Lip Funnies, Foos, inferior Funnies, Das Kampf.
Also on my last list were: Capt. Joint, God Nose '64, Lenny '65, Wild!, and APA #35.
Let me make it clear...I am not hunting for any comix.  Original comix art, yes.  No comix.

When my wife and kids kill me, you can get the art from them. I am still buying art when I can get it. Mostly covers unless it's a nice Corben page. Can't come close to matching  the Barks that you had but I got the covers to Jesus, Ozone 1, Bijou 3, Powermowerman, Arcade 4, Ilustrated check list, Seattle SImpleton 2, Checkered Demon 1, etc. About 50 pieces. Not like our fellow collector in PA who has 1100 pieces, but I'm happy. If you ever want to sell the comix I'm missing let me know. I also have a want list from a collector I know. I pay high for the stuff that I want.

Eleven...hundred?  Comix art?
Who has a Sugar Daddy that size?

You seem to have some nice and significant pieces, bro dr.  Nice job.  Way past my accumulation of sketch/drawing
/painting/house ads pieces. I maybe have a high number but...  And I have not picked too much up lately, either, while I have been buying paintings from trading card games like Magic the Gathering & Legend of the Five Rings.

As he slowly stumbles down the hall muttering, "Eleven hundred..."

i bought two sets of Air Pirates 1-2 BIN for $85,
kept the best set (#1 9.4 #2 9.2 tied the Fred Todd copies) &
traded the underset at San Diego for AS #1 in 8.5 & Zap 3 (1st) in 9.0.

Except toe the Todd Bode cover the Vampy 3 and the last Corben Raven page I got, never paid more the about a k for any of them. The Arcade, Simpleton, Consumer Comics, Checkered demon were $50 each and the Ozone and my 1st Raven page were about $100 each. Go the cover the What if 27 (Frank Miller) and the cover to X-men classics 1 for $100 each also. Paid $400 the splash for the first Carnage (Spidey 361). It's not luck, I'm just old.

I am 47 or 48, I forget. I was born on the last day before a new year. Anyway, I've been collecting UGs for a little over a year. I am totally uninterested in any other comics, except maybe Mad and Cracked. My mom used to buy them for me every time we went to the mall. I loved Mad! My dad was a gearhead, a Hot Rod fan, and a Playboy collector, and occasionally his world and mine would meet. I read Little Annie Fannie long before I knew what they were talking about. The Crumb 'Keep on Truckin' stuff was all over the place. Then I grew up. I didn't wake up until many years later, long after college, when I became interested in underground newspapers (journalism degree). But it was Terry Zwigoff's film that re-sparked my interest in Crumb, and through Crumb I found that there was a whole world of stuff that I had missed out on -- being born just a tad late. I bought a bunch of crap on e-Bay for too much money. Then I found CPG.com; lurked the forums; scoped out several of the references the members suggested; and I now have at least enough info at hand to make semi-intelligent decisions/mistakes. I see some of the same names here -- so I'd like to say thanx!

As long is it's not Bubba, had a bad altercation with Mykel T. Williamson once and let's just say that years afterwards reading about how he was stalking his ex-girlfriend and put a butcher's knife in her boyfriends abdomen in the middle of the street in front of her house wasn't that much of a surprise to me.  What was a surprise was the hung jury so he's another one that got away with (attempted) murder...

One nice collection, I've seen you bidding on eBay.  I see you're in Rosenkranz area in Oregon.  He's a poster her on the boards.  He let me know about two shows in Seattle.  The Frye Art Museum has a Crumb show from now until 27 April (you might want to check out if you're in Seattle) and one that just ended on 06 Feb. that was at the Fantagraphics Bookstore and Gallery.

Yes, I was going to bid on the Morse but it went away. Don't know if I'll be in Seattle by April or not but will see the exhibit if I get there. I live about 200 miles SE of Seattle, where and who is Rosenkranz of OR?

Well, I can answer the who portion.  Patrick Rosenkranz is the author of Rebel Visions (http://sirrealcomix.mrainey.com/page/_books/RebelVisions-1.htm).  (Gonna have to add this to the Wiki.)

And welcome, bdcues!!!

lol... Guess I should have looked up before I asked where and who. Rebel Visions is on the shelf above the computor. One would imagine that he has a large collection of undergrounds.
  Greetings, Sir Real.

You might want to add one of these to your collection if you don't have one (it's by Rosenkranz).
