Can anyone check their copy of Doll #1? In the copyright info. mine has a (2) at the end and I think it might designate the printing...

How very odd. If that's a second, it's a really different way to indicate it. I can't see it very closely, but I get the impression that the (2) is drawn in. Just an impression, mind you. Here's the indicia of my copy...

As I thought, yes I think it was drawn it (but it's not in pen).
The whole page looks hand lettered to me.
Just bought a set of this, as far as current knowledge goes, are these one and done printings?
Yup. One and done is all Guy Colwell got out of it.
One of my favorite series, for sure. Guy could really draw and write.
I think the above scan shows that this is a probable second print on #1, as others don't have the "(2)" on theirs.

I thought you were saying above it was drawn in, not printed.
My mistake for not making it clear, but kind of difficult. It appears that it was drawn in afterwards on the original and then printed (that's what I meant by not being drawn in by pen). It's definitely printed on my copy, but it appears that on the original at the printers it was drawn in to signify a 2nd print.
Probably a 2nd, then. You might want to try buying a copy directly from Rip Off, I assume if there were 2nd printings, that's what they would have.
I wouldn't disagree that there was a 2nd print of Doll #1. That wouldn't surprise me at all. I don't have a 2nd print, but if that "2" is printed as 50C says (and I'm certain he is correct), then there is little doubt in my opinion that it is a second print. I can't think of any reason that the printer would change the printing plate just to include that "2" on the first print, therefore it would be a second. The fact that the price remained the same indicates that the 2nd print followed closely after the first (perhaps within days or weeks).
When I said it was one and done, I meant the bulk of the series. Lord knows Guy Colwell could have used the money at that time, but he hardly got rich off of Doll. Still, it ran for 8 issues, far beyond the trilogy that he originally conceived, so at least the comic book provided him with some income in those tough days.
I just read Doll #1-7 (still need #8). I thought it was pretty good, although I thought some of the "messages" in the stories were laid on kind of thick. It's unique in that it's a "sex" book, but there's really nothing arousing (at least not to me) in the book. Another thing that is unusual is to me, there were really no likable characters in the book. Even the artist who created Doll as a act of kindness to Evergood, the deformed, lonely man, turns out to be a crazy loon later in the book, getting so fixated on Doll that his life falls apart around him.
That's part of what I like about the series; that all of the major characters are flawed, even the ones with altruistic motivations.
I agree that Colwell's writing gets a bit heavy-handed at times, driving home the point too blatantly and with long monologues. But I believe the messages themselves were very on point. I think the initial trilogy was an interesting story; somewhat of a classic tale with a twist.
I always thought it would make a good movie, especially with today's special effects and robotics. The subject matter, modern, artificial sex and how men would lust after, grow possessive, and build warped, one-sided relationships with a pleasure toy, is more relevant today than when it was published.
