Last time I spoke to Dan he said it would be out in November.
Any got any info. without me picking up the phone?
Thanks.
Jason
I would really like to know what the deal is, as well. I bet the people who pre-paid for ads aren't exactly thrilled at this point, I overheard at least one of them at a local comic show talking about the situation.
Not only that, I pre-paid for two copies of it.
I know in the original guide there was a timed event ad in there for a comic book show of some sort, hope there is nothing like that in this one as it is probably over until this makes it out.
Jason
I heard from Dan last month, he told me that he hoped to have it at the printers by February. But that it will be a substantial update with many mags, mini's, foreign, etc.
Does that mean it was insubstantial at the time of conception?
I have an ad in the supplement also and had been wondering when it would come out. Fogel says Feb. but who knows...

I don't think he initially planned any of the other stuff, just updated UG's. Now he's including lots of mini's, some mags. and foreigns.

i heard from him about that time as well.
As far as I know the supplement was originally planned to focus on minis and British UGs. I'm really looking forward to it. Dan could probably do with a blog of some sort so he could throw an update out every once in a while...
Thanks for starting this thread, Jason -- it's weird, I came over here just now for that very purpose!
So with all that said, I guess it will be out when it's out.
Anyone hears anymore, update us please.
Thanks.
Jason
Just got an email from Fogul - July by San Diego for the supplement with 16 pages more than originally planned for and same cover price.
July? WTF...
Wasn't it originally supposed to be out for San Diego 2007?
Was the original Fogel Guide this delayed? I'm sure it's a hell of a lot of work to put something like this together, but over a year's wait from when I initially pre-paid...
Imagine the big guns who have spent big money for advertisements.
Yeah that is kinda bullshit but what can ya do?
Jason
The original guide was delayed also. As for the advertsing, it was cheap.
Man, that sucks. Oh, well, it is what it is. I'm just glad he hasn't thrown in the towel on the whole thing.

I agree... I appericate his efforts.
Anyone bother to ask why or what is causing the delay?
Jason
Jason
Lack of money mostly to pay for printing I believe. He is having them printed thru Diamond
Well I advanced him cash for 2 copies. =]
Jason
After this update, the question is will he stick with his original plans and publish future editions? He's going to have even fewer sales in subsequent editions, because some collectors will be satisfied just having the first two. Unless the number of UG collectors suddenly swells....
He should take the business online as a subscriber service for $40-$50 a year.
If it's taken this long for a supplement, imagine how long it would take for a second full guide? Years.
Supposedly, Kennedys brother did a lot of the work on Jay's guide and it took a long time to complete and they never did another. The odds of Fogul doing another full guide would seem slim. Might help if he could talk the publishers into contacting him everytime they printed something so that he didn't have to do all the leg work.
Unlike Kennedy's guide, which was much more of a reference guide, Fogel's is basically a price guide, which would mean updating the prices on all of the comics currently in it, as well as adding new ones. Not an easy task.

Agreed on both counts. Oh well, expecting the Supplement to come out months ago got me to get my site relaunched sooner than it probably would've been...
I think the online subscription idea is a good one, although there'd probably still have to be some kind of print option (for example, for dealers to have at shows, in stores, etc.).

Yeah, and Kennedy's guide had pretty much covered the classic UG era, so there was not all that much motivation to update it, unless they really focused on the price guide aspect of it, in which case you could go for 5 or 10 years between editions, since prices didn't really move that much back then.
Whereas today, we are seeing more price movement and Fogel's price guide should come out at least every two years to keep pace. I'd be tickled to see a new, full edition every two or even three years. As you said, the task is not an easy one.

Maybe there could be a PDF edition available online, even if it looked very much like an Excel database that had been printed out.
I hate to disagree. But, I was there and is a minor way helped finance the Kennedy huide. Jay and Jerry came to my apartment and sold us $3k from Jerry's stash of undergrounds. About 30 of a title that came to $3 or $5 a book. We discussed the future of the guide and the pricing. Without going into details, no mater what the scholarly result was, it was a price guide. The was the intent. That and to make money and stir up the market. It did not do well in sales, which delayed a sequel. However every ug person in NYC tried to back Jay and get a second guide out. It was never the lack of funding that kept it from going out. It was the joke of the town. The guide would come out soon. But for whatever reasons, Jay never did it. Jerry finally put out his sort of guide and pissed off Jay. But, Jay still didn't do it.
Any updates on this?
Jason
Just got a e-mail from Dan this morning, he didn't mention the supplement but I assume it's still scheduled for SDCC release.
Let's hope...

Well, I actually DID pick up the phone a few weeks ago & called Hippy Comix & they told me that it's due out this July, over 6 months late. Last I checked their website was still saying last fall & the guy admitted to me that they hadn't updated it yet. Let's hope the NEW date is valid! <g> :01_bounce:
I pre-paid for the guide on May 4th....2007, that is. Yes, it's been over a year since I paid for this guide.

Don't feel bad, I bought two.

ok, so here we are, San Diego is nearly here. Are we actually going to get our updates or has another deadline come and gone?
What I heard from Dan 2 months ago was that if he didn't have them printed by San Diego Con (possible), that he would definitely have photocopies of them printed to bring to San Diego. I haven't heard anything further, so I don't know if they got printed or if he's bringing photocopies...
I don't know either, but he keeps asking me for scans. Even today.

Well, I'm not going to San Diego, so where does that leave me? :BangHead:
Does anyone know what the problem is with being this late?
"He keeps asking for scans, even today"?!?!?!
Scans of what? Is he trying to get scans of the rarest stuff out there?

If he is, he is asking the wrong person. :laughing11:
Jason
I will ask him at the party Wed
All I can tell you is it's getting closer. I can't say for sure whether or not it'll make San Diego but would guess it wouldn't be too much later than that.
Dan showed me the current workup of it and saw Dan showing/discussing it with Dr_S. It isn't finished yet, but he's working on it. Let's all hope that he can finish it before bigger things get in the way...
Well... Looks like Dan can shoot for next years Comic Con, or the year after that maybe. :offtheair:

If that's the case, maybe he can start "shooting" off some refunds to the people who have prepaid for copies. Also, what about the people who laid out money for ads? I bet they aren't too thrilled right now, either.
I preordered two copies myself. ::)
Jason
What was the original release date if some people were doing pre-orders in May 07?
That's not too cool... I'm sure the costs of putting the book together have risen sharply over the last year. That isn't a fun position Dan's in. How much were the pre-orders?
I don't even recall it was so long ago but I know I was charged at that time, in other words, Dan has my $$$.

Not sure what the original release date was going to be, but I thought I had originally heard it was to be ready for San Diego 2007. The pre-order cost was $12. I know because I still have my Paypal receipt (fat lot of good it would do me now).
I seem to remember it being targeted for the 2007 Comic-Con, too.
Maybe he got the 0 and the 7 mixed up?
2070?
Jason
In the year 2525 . . .
Is the new guide supposed to show updated pricing on specific books/titles and also have a section on mini-comix? I would be curious what the value Dan shows on some of those. I know the print runs are very small on most of them. I've seen copies sell on ebay for $5-50. I didn't get into many deep discussions on mini-comix with Clay. I'm not even sure how many he made. I know it was quite a lot. Dan's new book must not be very thick if pre-orders were $12. I think the other guide was $30. If he used the same font as Overstreet, he could same a lot of space but that tiny print is getting harder to see every year.
Who's going to be on the cover this time? Nina Hartley? Teri looked pretty good for surviving a bad wreck.
I've heard it's Annie Sprinkles taking a piss on John Holmes' schlong. You know, a retro cover.
All kidding aside, he should have used a smaller font, but oh well. The prices a lot of those minis have sold for is all over the place. I'm more than a little curious to see how he prices them.
The prototype update he showed me at Con didn't have a photo cover, was actually a good choice. It will have more pages than originally planned and the font will be smaller.
Just got an email from Dan and he says about a month.

Yeah, a month from what date of what year?
Jason
If Annie Sprinkles can survive........
Bdcues is right, the supplement is probably about a month away. I'd give it a few additional weeks to get through the printing and binding process and out to the collecting public. No need to hold your breath; we'll all have it no later than Halloween!
And like 50c said, the font will be smaller. Quite a bit smaller.... (but not Kennedy small!) I think everyone will be pleased by the scope of the supplement and how Dan manages the tricky aspect of pricing the crazy minis. We know prices have been all over the map over the years.
The supplement will be the same as the FUG: There will be plenty of people who bitch and moan about its shortcomings, but it will be an important first step in building a comprehensive price guide that serves our tiny little corner of the comic book world (which nobody else even cares about). As I have said for two years, I am grateful that Dan has the thick skin to survive the slings and arrows of our faithful sub-culture, and I expect that in the future the FUG will evolve into a guide that none of us could have imagined just three years ago.
I helped him a little with the mini prices at the show. At least, on my suggestion, he put a Corben character on the cover. How you can have a jam of 20 or 30 ug characters ,representing the major artists, without Den mystified me.

I always think of Den in relation to Heavy Metal magazine, I would have recommended Lame Lem perhaps, from Skull! Nice meeting you last week at Isaacs, Dr. Hope the rest of your visit went well!
I was just read an ad from Bud Plant for Fogels Supplement as being for sale now. Ad does not say that orders are being taken that will be filled when it comes out... says on sale now. Don't know where the ad was from.
It's not for sale now. Maybe pre-orders. I spoke to Dan today, but I didn't ask when it was coming out. I was afraid to.
