From what I've been able to glean, its a "fun" thing. If you want to be a dick, or blow away the Wiki, you gets smited. Say something clever, or in some other way be useful, you gets applauded.
At least, thats what I get out of it.
Shows how much I know, I thought the other word said "smile". heh
