... so , what do y'all think of the new , second edition of the 'rebel visions' book. the first was great for the field and , to me, this second edition has even better production values. great cover. great endpapers. and more examples from tabloids, which is where it all began. i like the photos of the art better than reproducing only the line drawings. kudos to patrick and team!

I actually sat down and compared them side by side, page by page and I'm liking the 2nd edition much better from the cover to the layout to the contents to the repros! Wish it were a hardcover as well, but that is my only complaint. Doesn't feel at all like a double dip! Buy a copy with confidence that it's almost like a whole new experience. And it looks real nice next to Patrick's Greg Irons book and the original Artsy Fartsy! Can't wait for his Rand Holmes book, which I believe is his next project.
I have the first edition and sight unseen (based on reviews I have read) I will declare that the second edition is the greatest book ever published on underground comics (before the 2nd ed. the 1st ed. held that honor). Skinn's book is a distant (yet respectable) second. Estren was a fun read but barely more than fandom eye candy/personal diary.
As a reference, Kennedy may always be king (Fogel is still chasing), but as a historical insight into the UG era, Patrick has outdone them all (apparently, even including himself).
Now I gotta dig up a copy of that Irons book wpbooks mentioned....
I agree with the "not a double dip" comment above.
The first edition, with every quote and paragraph footnoted, was so chuck full of information and the actual words from the comix creators themselves, that I can find no fault with this extensive and excellent history.
The new edition, with additional unpublished and color material, has been written in a more entertaining style. I would suggest that readers new to underground comix read this second edition of Mr. Rosenkranz's book first, but I have no problem finding shelf space for both volumes next to each other in my library.
