Title: More TJ Bible stuff, Underground or both?
Post by: wpbooks on June 12, 2008, 10:31:20 PM
Can find no information on this one in any of the references or from dealers at the usual sites online.  Inside cover indicia states: Copyright 1971 by W-F.  5466 Santa Monica Blvd. Hollywood, California 90029.  Interior is all reprints of TJ bible material and what looks to be a few pages of original artwork including a blasphemous bit about Jesus.  Anyone come across this one before? Admins feel free to move this to another location if you deem it unworthy of this one....wasn't sure where to post this!

I think I have it. Lots of stuff like that (mostly magazine sized from 1970-1972) Many listed on the comics price guide site.

I never know what to call that location as I just have it bookmarked as "underground forum"....but those were all BOOKS dedicated to TJB's not COMIC BOOKS, as this one is.  This has a more DIY kind of feel that seems closer to an UG than a regularly published, more mass marketed item.  This might appear in a head shop where those other tomes probably wouldn't....does that make sense?  That's why I posted it here as I can find no other listings for this particular item...though I would have guessed you would have one in your collection.

There are many in magazine sized formats. I got my copy of the comic at San Diego, probably from Terry Stroud. There are the comic Eros Tijuana Bibles, although much later. Since the topic is here now, I will try to post some of the mag covers. Some are quite neat. I guess, when the Supreme Court ruled on pornography in the late 60s, they just went wild and published every they could, including the reprint of the bibles.  I wondedr how many other comic book versions, if any, there are.
The Greenleafs are great because they included undergrounds. And, I am still looking for 2, the Sadomasochism in Comics and the Presidential Report.

Good luck on The Sadomasochism book but there is one listed at Abe from Ivan at Alta-Glamour, and The Presidential Report does have a habit of turning up...but The SM book is a toughie to be sure!

Some of those books I'm happy to have in just about any condition.

I remember seeing the President's Report on the Duece (42nd st to non New Yorkers) when it came out. What a book. To think, the only time I can remember when it made the papers big time that 42nd st was raided for porno was when they were selling Zap 4.

Without a doubt that book is one of the greatest "fuck you's" to the abridgement of the first amendment in publishing history.  Didn't Earl Kemp, the publisher, do some jail time for it.  I seem to remember reading somewhere that the treatment he got was similar to Mike Diana's conviction over his comics, only much earlier.  The story of that book would definitely make for an interesting article.

Anyone have any info. on this one?  It's small, has 24 internal pages, the drug references make it more than just Tijuana Bible and the only date I see is the copyright 1969 from the centerfold.  I wonder if they actually dosed any of the centerfolds, but my trippin' days are over so I ain't gonna try.

The only thing I could find is that Speigelman and Griffith put out a book in 1977 titled Tiajuana Bible Revival #2 "Under the Stars in Hollywood".  Interestingly they spell Tiajuana the same so maybe they are related 8 years apart?

Looks like they are not related, I found one reference to Tiajuana Bible Revival #1 Hot Nuts (1977).  But I wonder if this passage from this book Pornography and Sexual Representation (p. 934) is referring to which one?  If it's the one from 1969, then there might have been a #2, but I don't see any reference to a "Robert Murkey" in it so it's unlikely especially since Tijuana is spelled correctly in the title?

I posted some info/scans at the link below on the other board FYI. I've looked for the Murkey books, but so far to no avail....perhaps the Gooddr. has those which he can someday scan. Most of the other ones mentioned in that article I have in my possession.

What are the Murkey Books? Is that the company or author. What format are they, like the Greenleaf or like the mags. Are they Bible reprints or like the Sadomasochism?
At this point, I has sent scans of all of the PBs that I have, but not the mags.

I think Robert Murkey is the author.
Bill Griffith responded to an e-mail to state that the 1969 one isn't associated with the 2 from 1977 (except by maybe lifting the name?).
He has a #2 on this site for $75.

I stumbled onto that same article a few months ago and it got me looking for the mysterious "Murkey" books, thinking that they were also listed in the bibliography in Adelman's TJB book (they weren't), but the writer cites C. J. Scheiner as his source for that info, and having done business with that guy and having a few of his very detailed catalogs, if he says they exist then there is no reason to think otherwise....but he's not the easiest guy to pin down.  Maybe Gooddr. has done business with him as he lives in NY somewhere, or at least used to if he's still alive.  I think he was even an advisor on a Stanley Kubrick film (Eyes Wide Shut, I believe).  He's a bit of a guarded type, I think, but I spoke to him on the phone many years ago when I was collecting obscure Sex Crime books, and he turned me on to a lot of stuff I was unaware of.  But I lost track of him and forgot about him until I saw that article you sited above.  Murkey, indeed!

WP,

Could you list the publisher of those 2 books listed above to update the Wiki?  I know Speigelman edited vol. 2 and Griffith did the cover, but who published them and who did the cover for #1, if stated?

The cover for #1 is by Art Spiegelman under the pseudonym Al Floogleman, (see the scan of the original diptych he did for my copies below, signed with the pseudonym but changed for some reason to Al Flooglehorn).  The publisher is not listed, but since you made me open the books I just noticed that R. Murky is listed as the original owner of the archive the books came from...so the book YOU cite has the spelling wrong and it is indeed "the Tia juana Revival's" pictured above that the reference is for....I'm guessing there is no other book by Murky besides these. "Hot Nuts" is copyright 1977 from Penetrating Pubs. Inc of Blue Balls, PA and ' "Under The Stars Of Hollywood" is copied right(sic) Paramounds Prod. Hooker, California'.  I suspect the books were probably published by The Belier Press as that is where they could be ordered from on the solicitation I scanned and posted on the other forum.  The reverse of the solicitation advertisement is the ad for R. Crumbs Carload Of Comics which you can kind of see in the scan below.  I'll try to crank up the old scanner and post a scan of it, but right now I've got to get ready to go to one of my jobs.  Thanks for being persistent as the R. Murky mystery has now been cleared up and I can stop trying to find that "phantom" book(s)

I've updated the Wiki on the "T" page at least.
I noted on the vol. One that it appeared the Tia juana was seperated, but then on vol. Two it doesn't on the cover.

"I wonder if they actually dosed any of the centerfolds, but my trippin' days are over so I ain't gonna try."

I licked the screen.
Didn't get high, didn't get off.
Sorry you loose.
