Are you a collector who wants ever book in the Kennedy guide or Illustrated Check List? Do you buy books to fill in gaps in series? Do you collected by favorite artist or writer? Do you collect by or up unto a certain year?
How do you collect?
Jason
Haphazardly. ADD'dly.
Oh look. A bunny...

yep.
nope
I've always been the "I want it all!" type of collector, but the guide that I actively collect from is Mal Burns' Comix Index. I have most of it, but I'm still missing a painful handful of titles.

Mal Burns' Comix Index? What's that?
I would consider myself to be a "I want it all" as well.

I collect by artist pretty much, as I've noticed there's a good percentage of UG that to me is unreadable and amateurish crap. I'm not charmed by that kind of thing and I only have so much space amongst all of the other "pop culture" stuff I collect/accumulate. So I guess I'm somewhat of a snob because I really don't want more than 2 magazine/comic boxes of UG and having recently pulled all of it out and investigated and consolidated my holdings, I'm pretty much there except for the occasional upgrade that comes my way that is in the ballpark of what I feel like spending, or trading for.....
Well if you have books for sale, feel free to PM me a list.
I hear what you are saying and I know Arnold would agree with you. There is no doubt a lot of crap out there and even some of the titles that go for major dollars are crap, only selling high due to rarity. I myself am a hoarder so I take the good with the bad but hate paying top dollar for something I am not interested in...
Here is a good example. I recently acquired a very nice copy of Allstars #1 off Arnold which I had no real clue of the content only judging by Allstars #2. Needless to say they are nothing even close to being the same and although it is nice to have 1 & 2, I would do nothing more with the book other than file it. Since however it is not a cheap book to buy, Arnold has been nice enough to let me send it back in exchange for something else. So in this case I have somewhat bended my rule of wanting it all. It's not that I don't want the book in my collection because I do but with the wide array of what Arnold has, I would much rather spend it on something I care about... Confused Yet?
Jason
I get exactly what you are saying. I started collecting this stuff as a wee lad of 12 back in 1973, and never really had to pay too much for my acquisitions, ever, even now, and I just don't want something because it's rare. It's got to be rare and of interest to me...there's only so much time to enjoy this stuff in the scheme of things so I figure might as well go for THAT. Sure, if something crosses my path that I know or suspect is rare I'll pick it up for later trade fodder if the price or sometimes lack of price is right...but I no longer seek it out like I did in the 70's and 80's....do you get what I'm saying...kapeesh?
Yup...

Looks cool, you got any for sale? If so, send me a PM with a price.
Thanks.

I usually collect to fill in a complete run, if possible. But, if there is a really nice copy of a certain issue number that I love, I'll go after it even if I have 20 of them. I believe UGs are a little harder to fill/locate due to the smaller print runs. I think the most current UG I have are my Cherry 1s. My free time seems to be less and less each year otherwise I would go check out newer UGs. The most currect Marvel/DC I bought off the rack was probably back in the late 90s and those were just one step up from crap.
Personally I'm attracted to comix w/ a drug overtone.
I collect any book with good art... pulps, comix, and comics... artbooks, illustrated novels, and limited first editions... very rarely do I get a book for JUST the cover art, but sometimes, yes, even that :D

i collect the anthology titles where i get a board array of art & stories, those are my favorites... Zap, Bijou, Yellow Dog
i collect Crumb, Freak Bros., & some character appearances.
i strive to collect 1st prints almost exclusively (except where i am priced out or still looking)
i started collecting almost solely out of Donahue's catalog... that was really the core of the "how" of it... comparing Donahue's prices versus Kennedy's to determine what was still a relative steal compared to '82 values & what had increased by 400-800%.
i don't think i will attempt a whole checklist. it just seems too daunting. :icon_eek:
Greetings folks! This thread seems like a good place for me to start posting...... I haven't been collecting UGs as long as some of ya'll - since some of ya'll were on the "scene" in the 60's and 70's (I was born in 68, been collecting comics since about 1980), but I've come to really enjoy this medium. I was a main-stream type, hunting mostly for Silver Age Marvels (was working on a Spidy run 1-100). But when Ebay came into exsistance, the thrill of the hunt went out the door. Except for UGs and their low print runs and small circulations. As I got more into them, the stories associated with some of them I found to be facintating - like Doomsday Comics. I would say that I'm your typical horder, but I do tend toward certain genres/themes. I really like Shelton, Corben and Bryson (and of course Crumb). Anyway, there ya'll have it.... I look forward to chatting, posting, reading, learning, etc with "all ya'll"!!!
Welcome aboard, zazz! I've certainly seen you bidding on eBay. :01_bounce:

yeah, like this one:

I was the third highest bid, but well under the top two.
Welcome...
Yeah, I've been looking for a Captain Sticky for a little while.... Looking forward to reading it! Sorry if you were the one I took it from..... 8-)
I probably paid a little over what I should have... but, as far as ebay goes, this is only the 4th one I've seen in 5 years. Of course I'm betting some of ya'll hunters could find one. I don't get a lot of free computer time (2 small kidlets)...... so ebay is what I use - for better or worse....
BTW, does anyone know what the print run on this is?

Never have to apologize for that, I wasn't even the first underbidder, so if you hadn't gotten it, the other person would have. I'm a notorious cheapskate, I will bid more what something is worth to me to have, not necessarily actual value. Welcome to the board, this is the place to be for underground collectors.
I was thinking of paying 40-50 for resale but then saw that it was a reprint. So I didn't bother to bid. While I need the reprint for myself, I have to draw the line somewhere. By the was, hi Zazz, I think Isold you stuff in the past or maybe bought from you.
Dr S, yep. I got my Beantown Funnies from you... among other things.... that was the last one though.

You're talking about the Lizard Zen, right? What value would you assign to the 2nd print?
Yeah, the second print Lizard Zen. I'm not sure what it would be worth. I got one about a year ago for $10 or $15. This is only the second one I've seen pop up on Ebay.
Odd, I've seen 3 of these in the last month, one on eBay now and one in each of the large collections I've checked out recently.
There you have it! I tend to just look at ebay... mostly due to time constraints. Any idea what the print run is at?
