Food Stamp Gourmet - Which Is The First?

I recently came across a copy of The Food Stamp Gourmet at a sale, and in comparing the copy I found with the one shown on Sir Real's site, I notice a major difference in front covers, though he says the one illustrated is a first.  At the lower left of the front cover my copy states "Patrician Eating On A Proletarian Budget" rather than the quote from Women's Wear Daily.  It has the same cover price.  On the inside it lists Gilbert Shelton's name as Gilbert SHELDON.  Was this corrected in Sir Real's copy or is my copy the second printing that was mis-proofread.  On Sir Real's site he links the book to the Kennedy Guide, but I don't find it listed, and Fogel doesn't have any information as to the different states.  Can anyone verify which edition is the first? Thanks in advance for any help.

Very interesting, I've only got one copy at home and I'll check when I get back but without both I doubt I can help.  Just from the sound of it, I would lean towards the one with the author's name mis-spelled being the earlier one.
Sounds like a new unidentified printing to me would qualify for the contest...

Okay...Feel free to enter my post/discovery and I'll keep my fingers crossed.  BTW, you are a very generous fellow and I salute you and your contest! BooYah!

From CounterMedia, Spring 1992:
At least three editions of Food Stamp Gourmet are known to exist. The cover of the first has the blurb,"Patrician Eating on a Proletarian Budget," in the lower left corner and the author's name and price (Wm Brown $1.50) in the lower right corner. The back cover is a black and white drawing as described below, without text. The contributor's notes on inside front cover misspell Gilbert  Shelton's last name as Sheldon. The cover of the second edition has the blurb "it's cause for celebration. -- Women's Wear Daily," in the lower left corner and the author's name and price (same as above but in different typeface) in the lower right corner. The back cover is now in color and has added text. The contributors' notes on inside front cover are entirely different (and get Gilbert Shelton's name right). Most importantly, 31 new drawings have been added to the text, two drawings have been altered (including one in which a man goes from reading a copy of How to Stop Corporate Polluters to ready Wyf of Bath, both Greg Irons illustrated Bellerophon books). three drawings have been eliminated, and the large GI drawing on the inside back cover has been reduced to make room for an ad for the R. Crumb illustrated cookbook, Eat It. The cover of the third edition has the blurb, "For the Coin-Conscious Connoisseur" in the lower left corner and nothing in the lower right corner. The back cover is as above except with different text and a $1.95 price in the upper left corner. There is additional text on the inside front cover and slightly different text on the inside back cover. Inside front cover: Couple having meal. Accompanies contributors' notes. PP 1-48 Virtually every page has a GI illustration, from small kitchen still-lifes to full-blown cartoons. Inside back cover: Child at table coloring in coloring book. Illustrates house ad for Bellerophon coloring books. Back cover: Man cooking at an old-fashioned stove. Larger version of drawing on P. 42, b/w.

Thank you, RV, for the clarification.  I figured with the misspelling it seemed more likely to be the first, but the second sounds like you get more bang for the buck, all around, so must keep a look out for it, now, as well.

Sir Real

Will wonders never cease.  Okay, The Food Stamp Gourmet, 2nd edition is now corrected.

Oh, and I don't link the book to JK's guide.  There is a link there, but the # designation is shown as "n/a", meaning that there is no entry in the guide.

Sorry, Sir Real, didn't mean to imply anything, just went with the link and was unaware of the significance of the "n/a". BTW, that's a really grand site you got there... never really navigated around it until now.  A Beaut, indeed!

Sir Real

No need to apologize.  It's not really that clear, and the link only goes to the description of the book, not any specific entry.  I'm rethinking the need for that link, anyways.  Especially since Fogel's guide came out.

And thanks for the compliment.  Tain't anything special.  It's really low-tech coding all the way around.  But it does allow for each individual page to be Googled.

In fact, it was through Googling the title that I came across your entry.  Very useful, to be sure!
