50Cent #II (1st print)

Grabbed this image from Plymell's MySpace pics, he forwarded me a letter in which he states he doesn't even own a copy of the 1st print he printed.

Is it certified.?  Fucken, CGC took off from one I bought. Their comment was, writing on the cover. Does anybody know what a cgc 8 with writing on the cover would be without the writing? I bought it slabbed, I never submitted it.

Haw! That's classic. It must be really frustrating dealing with a company that requires step-by-step handholding in order to provide the service they charge so much for.

Supposedly, they are not supposed to take off from the grade for a signature unless it damages the book in some way. It should have graded the same as an unsigned one, but it would get a green label "qualified" because of the signature. They don't accept any autographs as authentic unless they are from their "signature series".

It has a blue label that says writing on cover as a defect.  It looks better than my 8.0 copy, so I assume something was deducted, But  how much? Anyone know rather than guessing?

Brother J

No idea why they gave it a universal label if there was a signature on the front cover. No, no one will know because CGC doesn't release their grading standards or what they will deduct for any specific defect.

I passed on one of these in even better condition. Infact the one I had access to came with a hand written letter from Plymell.

That's the exact same issue, one on a scanner that shows more defects and one with a camera.

Here's some info. I received from Charles regarding this issue and his book...
"...There is only one with both our signatures and I sold it long ago for $5,700, so I guess it's the back of that one. It might be worth it to get The Last of Mocs with Robert Williams cover as they are more rare than City Lights even tho C.L. is first edt. Ferlingfuck kept them back until he signed over the rights to MotherRoad and then flooded the collectors with them. This, after the Austrian edition had to split the advance with him as publisher. I never got any royalties. I'm through with millionaire beats. I hope millionaaire comix artist are better people. Haven't heard from S. Clay for a while. I'm going to have to sell a couple of his originals to pay for my burial. cp"

Visitor Q

Is it? Interesting... I have about 6 pictures of it, here is a full shot of the front.

Here's some news I found on a letter from C. Plymell regarding this copy.  Seems that Plymell picked out some of the nicest pages early in the print and personally put this copy together (bound, unlike the rest that were bound by Dana and "Mimi") before he even showed Crumb a finished copy, and gave it to his friend Glen Todd.  Too bad it wasn't kept in that same condition...

Here what happened later with this copy via a personal e-mail to me from Plymell:
"We had a lot of Owsley and Sandoz in the cabinet at the time. This was extended dada, and the kids at the Oracle I thought were too moralistic and square, though Cohen came to my poetry reading in S.F where a first Zap was displayed lose on a shelf by Glenn Todd whom I gave one too at printing. I told him it wasn't a very good idea, so he gave it to me and I signed it on the back as did Crumb beside my name as printer. That was c1997. I sold it to friend of Weinderg's for 5,700. That's the only one signed by both of us."

So this might be a special copy and maybe the first or one of the first copies put together (bound) by Charles himself for Glen Todd, then given back to Plymell (don't know when both Plymell and R. Crumb signed it though) who eventually sold it to a friend of Weist who then had to sell it.

Could this post make that copy one of the most important if not the most important copy of a Plymell Zap Comix #1?

"Eggs"  I think I just posted one hell of a pedigree for that copy...

So, who does own that copy, anyway?

If it is the only one with Plymell's and Crumb's sigs, then it does seem to me to be worthy of considerably higher value.

I'm sure Crumb has signed more than a few first prints over the years. But getting Plymell's and Crumb's sigs together must be rather unique.

I'm sure I could find out because I knew who the original owner was and then the person who offered it to me for sale.

ps. I have more pix of it that I did not even post.

It's a board member, I'll let them admit to it on their own if they want.  But I think they did post it here or on the other boards once if you want to search.
