Received this info. from Charles Plymell himself on this day  24 May 2008 after sending him a copy of my rough draft article, in regards to the print run of the 1st print of Zap Comix #1.

"I think 3,000 is a pretty good estimate. Don (the record keeper) wouldn't have let me short him by much more than a thousand copies. It's just hard for me to imagine 5000 x whatever + color runs...pages drying around in piles only 6 or so inches high. It didn't have the receding deck that a pile of thousands of sheets stacked from the press. I was teaching Don while we were printing."

I think this basically ends the controversy of how many were printed and released.
