Sounds like you have an interesting collection there Reverend.  I wish the foreign pcs were more available but they do not seem to come up that often.  I have the Cozmic Comix series., Graphixious Series and some others.  I like the Finnish Jymy's and the Dutch Aloha's & real Free Press stuff also.   I have about 41 boxes of UG's at this point and I'm glad my daughter moved out because I now have her bedroom to store all this stuff.

I think I will concentrate on the Oz series next.  Just picked up a VF++ copy of San Francisco #1 for good Price on Ebay.  I buy just about anything with Crumb Art on it whether it be foreign or domestic.  Also got a Tabloid "Northwest Sextra with full Cover of Clay Wilson Art +  comix in by him and Crumb interview the other day.  :occasion16:

Wonder if Weist forgot that half the 1st prints were "factory" trimmed according to Plymell and this may not have been "restoration" trimmed?
Anyway a forum member got a very good deal with the Snatch #1 (1st print) and the Cunt, imo.

What's funny to me is the trouble he took to cover the word "cunt" yet "R. Fuck" is pretty prominent.  A great deal to be sure, and one I almost wish I had been aware of!

EggsAckley

I have it from a good source that the Plymell was definirely trimmed on 3 sides, not factory cut.

If Weist estimated the auction would go from $300 to $700 and it actually sold for $1,800, I'm not so sure it was such a great buy after all. Jerry knows his values, that is for sure. And if he says the Plymell book was "tragically" trimmed on three sides, I tend to trust his judgement.

But Eggs, I gotta ask; how can you tell the difference between printer-trimmed Plymells and trimming done in the after-market? Are there precise, standard size measurements for printer-trimmed books?

I would be leery of investing in any trimmed Plymell (factory or otherwise), myself. I know my Plymell has at least 3/8 inch more overhang than the book in Weist's auction.

EggsAckley

The edges of the trimmed sides usually will look different than the rest of the paper in that it has aged differently. If I wasn't sure I would submit it to CGC as they have the expert eyes to make a correct determination. I don't think it was a great buy unless I needed a Plymell, didn't care about the trimming and was not planning on ever reselling the book. After all, burnt up copies have sold for a grand. The highest I was willing to bid on it was $1150 ish.

To me the key was the Snatch 1. A fine first print is harder to get than a Zap 1 1st. If I needed it, I might go $1500 for it alone. The Zap at $500 and the cunt at $200 would make it a high retail at $2200. Of course, the $1800 was what won it. The real question was what was the person's max bid?

I agree that the Snatch #1 1st was the true prize of that auction. Getting the Cunt and the Plymell was gravy. Upon further review, Weist probably underestimated the value by quite a bit. Lord knows I would've tossed a couple grand at that auction two years ago.

What kills me is the Plymell. It is such an important comic book, I don't think I could stand to purchase a blatantly trimmed copy of it. Pressed and minor tweak restorations, maybe, but trimmed by a modern-day Xacto knife? Eeeewww.

Eggs, I dig what you're saying about the trimmed edges looking different and aging differently than the rest of the paper. I know that kind of stuff pretty well and I bet I could spot it myself if I examined it closely. In essence, the color of the edge (the interior pulp) of the paper would be brighter than the rest of the paper, and the "new" edge would also be cleaner, with less "dust" and "hairs" than a trimmed edge from 40 years ago. Also, the very tiny chips on the front edges of the paper would look sharper than the original chips on virgin paper. You would need a magnifying glass to discern most of these tell-tale signs.

But I was wondering if there was a standard, precise size for Plymells that were trimmed by the printer back in 1968. I didn't realize that Plymell claimed there were printer-trimmed copies, as I have only seen untrimmed copies on the market.

Arnie, have you run into Plymells that you were sure were trimmed by Apex Novelties?

For god's sake, somebody show me a scan of a Plymell that they know was trimmed by Donahue in 1968!

The amazing thing about this site, is that I keep finding out things about ugs that everyone thought there was nothing to find out about. The trimmed Zap is new one me.

This one seems a bit much for all later printings?  But it ain't crazy.
