I was surprised to learn recently that the book common types of Barflyze (1974) you usually see with an all red cover is actually a later printing.

I believe it was originally published in either the 40's or 50's.  I saw one once at either Stuart Ng's or Jim Vadebancouer's table at a con, but they wanted more than I could afford for it, and since it's identical to the reprint, I just had to settle for it....but if I come across it again, I'll probably succumb!

Original was from 1952.  Saw one at the SDCC also, but forget what they wanted for it.

Is there a different cover price on the original one?

BTW, Mile High has copies of this (the more recent version) for sale at a pretty decent price if anyone is interested. It's under "Barflyze"

I think it may have been $1 on the cover, but it's been awhile since I saw it....50?

$1.00 is correct for the original 1952 printing.  Of note is that the title of the original was "Common Types of Barflize or who stole my martini" by Wolverton the later cover states "common types of Barflyze" by Basil Wolverton with a $2.00 cover price.

Nice one Egg's, my bid was just under yours.

Well, even though this is generally 50Cent's ones that got away thread, I thought I would post one I was hoping to get a good deal on.

Wow, where were all the bidders on this one? If I hadn't put a bid in, mrbillscomix would have gotten this one for $9.99.

Wow, nice lot.  Missed that one, but at least a fellow forumite won it.

Still no scan of issue #1 for the Wiki.

Reverend

Damn. I completely missed that, too. I would've put in a nice bid had I know about it. Ugh.

mrbillscomix

That was strange... I think it sat on $9.99 for a week... It is my first #5.  I don't know why but I haven't ever seen one.  I thought it would have brought at least 3 new bidders in at the end.  I'll add the 2 & 4 to my stack. That Good Eatin Comix issue is new to me also. I found a Gunfighter #1 in a box yesterday but it's too crappy to post. I think it came from a local collection of UGs I bought awhile ago.   I'll find one of my nicer copies to post for you.  I'll continue that conversation over where I posted the Can O'Beans #3.

Uh???? Confusion here?  Did someone ask if this had multi-colored interior covers or something?

I certainly hope so...

the seller describes the book as mint minus, which is EXTREMELY optimistic. As a matter of fact, isn't that a corner crease in the lower right corner?

mrbillscomix

Mint-minus?  That's a new one...  You guys have good eyes.. I could only see that crease after staring at it for a minute.   Crease=VF.  Otherwise, it looks nice.

Even a raw MINT copy wouldn't explain the $140 price.

mrbillscomix

That's true... Who's the guy that bought it?  mthwhbr?  I might be able to dig up a few more copies in the "mint-minus" range for $140.
